Croatia’s Teenage Wimbledon Hopeful Rules Out UK Switch

Croatia’s teenage tennis star Donna Vekic hopes to continue her recent form, which saw her make her second WTA tour final in Birmingham recently, when Wimbledon gets underway today in London.

The 16-year-old blonde Osijek-born star, who has been compared to Maria Sharapova in the British press leading up to the year’s third Grand Slam, will feel like she is playing at home after being based in London for a number of years now. Vekic spends a majority of the year in London with her British coach David Felgate, and the Brits have not given up on trying to poach the talented Croat to play for Great Britain.

Vekic, however, has ruled out any such move, saying that her home is Croatia and she will always be Croatian. Vekic, who is currently ranked 64 in the world, was mentored by Chris Evert and is considered by many in the game to be the next big thing in women’s tennis.
