Croatian mountaineers Ranko Dragičević and Davor Večaj have achieved a remarkable feat by reaching the summit of Denali, the highest peak in North America at 6,190 metres.

Their successful ascent marks not only a milestone in Croatian mountaineering but also a significant moment in humanitarian efforts, as part of the campaign “Srcem kroz planine – Denali” (Hearts Through Mountains – Denali).

Denali, also known as Mount McKinley, is considered one of the most challenging climbs in the world due to its harsh weather conditions, technical difficulty and remote location deep in the Alaskan wilderness.

Only around half of all attempts to reach its summit end in success. Temperatures on the mountain can drop below -30°C in May, adding to the formidable physical and mental test the climb presents.

Dragičević and Večaj, joined by fellow climbers Senadin Sahtijarija and Den Eror, began their ascent on 11 May.

Their expedition was as much about heart as it was about endurance, aiming to raise funds for much-needed medical equipment for the health centre in Supetar, on the island of Brač.

“This expedition is not just a battle with the mountain, but an opportunity to show how powerful our unity can be,” said Mate Mladina, Director of the Brač Red Cross.

“While the team climbs Denali, each of us has a chance to contribute. Every donation, message of support, or word of encouragement is a step closer to better healthcare for our community. Together, we can make a real difference – whether from the summit or here at home.”

The humanitarian goal behind the climb is to equip the Supetar Health Centre with essential items including a patient lift for those with limited mobility, a paediatric ECG machine, and basic hospital necessities such as cabinets, feeding aids, and lifting slings.
