Croatian speed skaters reach semifinals at EURO 2021, new record set

GDANSK, 23 January 2021 –  It has been a great start for the Croatian team at the 2021 European Short Track Speed Skating Championships in Gdańsk, Poland. 

Both Croatian competitors in the female competition have achieved excellent results after the opening day and have advanced in the competition. Valentina Aščić advanced in two disciplines as she reached the semifinals in the 1500 m and the quarterfinals in the 500 m, meanwhile Katarina Burić reached the quarterfinals in the 1000 m.

In the men’s competition, Martin Kolenc excelled by reaching the quarterfinals in the 500 m with a new national record of 41,901s. He is the first Croatian skater to skate faster than 42s in the 500 m.

The competition continues on Saturday when the finals of the 500 and 1500 m disciplines are scheduled.

The Croatian team of Katarina Burić, Valentina Aščić, Ivan Martinić and Kolenc are competing against a strong field of 138 skaters from 25 European countries. 

The 2021 European Short Track Speed Skating Championships will be broadcast live on Saturday from 13:00 to 18:30 on Arena sport 6, and all three competition days of the competition are streamed on the official ISU (International Skating Union) YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/SkatingISU
