Two Croatian Army soldiers have achieved outstanding results at the prestigious Best Warrior Competition in Minnesota, USA.
Lance corporal Kristofor Josip Jurjević claimed first place, while commander Dario Stegnjaić secured second, marking a proud moment for the Croatian Armed Forces on the international stage, the Ministry of Defence said.

The competition took place in late April 2025 and featured military personnel from various countries, including members of the Minnesota National Guard and the Canadian Armed Forces.
Jurjević and Stegnjaić, both from the Guards Mechanised Brigade of the Croatian Army, were accompanied by warrant officer Stipica Bolanča.
Speaking after his win, Jurjević shared a touching insight into his motivation.
“My main driving force in the toughest moments was my four-year-old daughter. I didn’t want to let her down, and maybe one day this victory can inspire her to overcome her own challenges. Representing my unit and my country was both an honour and a matter of integrity,” he said.

The Croatian duo’s success reflects the high level of readiness and professionalism within the Croatian Armed Forces, reinforcing their competitiveness in international military circles.
This year’s competition was tougher than ever, following a new, intense format that left little room for rest or recovery.
Over several days, participants were tested through demanding day-and-night navigation exercises, weapons handling with various U.S. military arms (including M4A1, M17, AT4, M240, and MK19), and survival challenges based on the S.E.R.E. method – including crossing a simulated hostile area while evading patrols and surveillance.

The highlight of the event was the “Valor Ruck” – a gruelling 20-kilometre commando march carrying full gear and weapons, during which participants had to complete five tactical tasks, including live firing and battlefield medical care (Tactical Combat Casualty Care – TCCC).

Established in 2002, the Best Warrior Competition honours the critical role of soldiers and NCOs in the U.S. Army structure. Hosted annually by the Minnesota National Guard, the winners receive prestigious awards and go on to represent the Guard at higher-level contests and military events throughout the year.
Jurjević and Stegnjaić have not only proven their skills and endurance but have also proudly flown the Croatian flag high in one of the world’s most respected military challenges.
