New Croatian coin pays tribute to the symbol of the Neretva

Croatian Mint, in cooperation with the Croatian National Bank Croatian National Bank, has announced a new numismatic issue in its ongoing “Hrvatski brodovi” (Croatian Ships) series, dedicated to the traditional Neretvanska lađa.

The release continues a collection that celebrates Croatia’s rich maritime and riverine heritage through carefully designed commemorative coins.

Symbol of the Neretva Region

The Neretvanska lađa is a traditional wooden vessel from the Neretva River valley in southern Croatia. With its shallow draft, the boat was historically adapted for navigation through marshlands, river branches and canals.

For centuries, it served as a key means of transport for local communities, used for carrying people, livestock, agricultural goods, food, construction materials and other essential supplies.

Historical records of traditional vessels in the Neretva region date back to the 17th century, appearing in chronicles and travel writings that describe the area’s unique landscape and way of life.

With the development of road infrastructure and motor transport, the practical use of the lađa gradually declined. However, the tradition of living with and using the vessel has been preserved through strong local identity and cultural continuity in the Neretva valley.

A key role in maintaining this heritage is played by the “Maraton lađa” event, a sporting and tourism race that has become a recognised symbol of the region and contributes to the visibility of Neretva’s cultural identity.

The importance of the tradition has also been formally recognised by Croatia’s cultural authorities, with the “Tradition of life with the trup and lađa” inscribed as an element of intangible cultural heritage.

New Numismatic Release

The new “Neretvanska lađa” edition is issued in five variations, including:

• Gold coins of one ounce, ¼ ounce and 1/16 ounce

• Silver coins of one ounce and two ounces

The one-ounce gold coin is produced in the highest minting quality (proof finish), while the remaining editions are struck in high-quality brilliant finish.

The collection forms part of the Croatian Mint’s broader effort to highlight national heritage through modern numismatic design.
