Croatian Employment Service records 159,234 unemployed in April

ZAGREB, May 11 (Hina) – At the end of April 2020, there were 159,234 unemployed persons in Croatia, which is 11% more compared to Mach 2020 and 21.5% more than in April  2019, the Croatian Employment Service (HZZ) said on Monday.

According to HZZ figures, at the end of April 2020 there were 15,773 more jobless month on month and 28,144 more year on year.

Recently the Croatian Chamber of Commerce commented that this is the first time in recent history that unemployment increased in April as April is when unemployment starts to decrease due to seasonal jobs in tourism.

Daily data recorded by HZZ indicates that unemployment was continuing to grow in May and at the moment there are 159,560 jobless or 325 more than at the end of April. There are 8,058 vacant jobs advertised.

A total of 9,710 registered unemployed were taken off the list in April, which is 63.8% fewer y-o-y. Of that number 5,148 found jobs.

In April, 43,143 unemployed people or 27.1% were on the dole, which is an increase of 73.1% on the year or 18,220 people.
