Kuhano vino
Winter is not the same without knocking a few glasses of kuhano vino, or mulled wine, back during the festive period.
One thing you could find at most Advent stands across Croatia over the past few years is a variety of kuhano vino to go with the sausages and fritule. Although kuhano vino is usually traditionally made with red wine, white wine options are available too.
With no stands this year open during Advent across the country because of measures put in place to curb the spread of coronavirus, here is a simple but tasty recipe using red wine to whip up at home to get into the Christmas mood.
Ingredients
Red wine – 750 ml
Orange juice (freshly squeezed) – 100 ml
Sugar – 150 g
Star anise – 1
Nutmeg – 1 teaspoon
Cloves – 5
Cinnamon – 1 stick
Lemon – 1 (peel)
Orange – 1 (peel)
Instructions
In a pot put in sugar, star anise, nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon, juice and orange and lemon peel (can put in slices if you like).
Pour just enough of the wine to cover the ingredients and cook on medium temperature for 5-6 minutes until mixture thickens.
Now add the rest of the wine and simmer for another 5 minutes. Remove all the ingredients and pour them into a cup.
Serve with orange peel or slice inside (optional)
