What Croatia need to qualify for World Cup knockout stage after Panama victory

Croatia keep World Cup knockout hopes alive

Croatia remain firmly in contention for a place in the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama.

A decisive goal from Ante Budimir proved enough to earn all three points and keep Croatia’s hopes alive heading into the final round of Group L matches.

While the performance was far from convincing, the result was exactly what Croatia needed after opening their campaign with defeat.

The win means Zlatko Dalić’s side can no longer finish bottom of the group and are guaranteed to end the group stage at least in third place.

Following two rounds of matches, England lead Group L with four points, level with second-placed Ghana. Croatia sit third on three points, while Panama are bottom of the table and have been eliminated from contention.

Croatia will face Ghana in their final group match on Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. At the same time, England will take on Panama in New Jersey.

A victory over Ghana would guarantee Croatia at least second place in the group and a place in the knockout stage. There is also a possibility of finishing top if England fail to defeat Panama.

Should Croatia draw with Ghana, they would finish third in the group on four points. In that scenario, qualification for the knockout stage would be highly likely as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.

Even a defeat against Ghana would not necessarily end Croatia’s campaign. Thanks to the victory over Panama, Croatia are assured of finishing ahead of Panama and would remain in the race for one of the knockout places reserved for the highest-ranked third-placed teams.

According to tournament projections, Croatia’s chances of reaching the knockout stage have risen significantly following the win over Panama. Current estimates place Croatia’s probability of progressing at 96.2 per cent.

The same projections give Croatia a 49.7 per cent chance of finishing second in the group, a 45.4 per cent chance of ending third and a 4.8 per cent chance of topping the standings.

Everything will therefore be decided in the final round of Group L fixtures, with Croatia knowing that their fate remains firmly in their own hands as they prepare for a decisive clash against Ghana.
