2 February 2025 – Croatia has claimed the silver medal at the 2025 IHF World Men’s Handball Championship after falling to Denmark in the final on Sunday.

A strong contingent of Croatian fans made the trip to Unity Arena in Oslo, Norway, hoping Croatia could repeat their heroics from 2003 when they won gold.

Denmark, the triple defending champions, having won the last three world titles in 2019, 2021, and 2023, were favourites and from the start and they showed their class in what was a physical final.

Croatia stayed within striking distance for most of the first half, and trailed by just one goal after the opening 20 minutes, but a crucial turning point came when Marko Mamić was shown a red card for a dangerous high tackle.

A late burst of goals saw Denmark go into the break leading 16-12.

Ivan Martinović was in good form for the Croatians in the first half, regularly finding the back of the net.

In the second half, Croatia started off on the back foot, leaking early goals. Dominik Kuzmanović, one of the standout goalkeepers of the tournament, made some key saves, but Denmark’s relentless attack proved too strong.

The champions extended their lead to nine goals midway through the second half, but the Croatians did not give up.

Although Croatia managed to narrow the deficit, Denmark were always in control and held on for a deserved win 32-26.

Despite the loss, Croatia can hold their heads high. The team exceeded expectations, capturing the hearts of the nation and delivering a thrilling campaign, especially the victories over Hungary and France in the semi-final.

This silver medal adds to Croatia’s proud handball history, joining the gold won back in 2003.
