Croatia wins European Wheelchair Handball gold

ZAGREB, 17 December 2019 – Croatia has won gold at the 4th European Wheelchair Handball Nations’ Tournament which was held in Zagreb. 

Croatia won gold for the first time after beating Portugal in a tense final on Sunday. Croatia were trailing 4-3 at halftime but managed to come from behind to edge their rivals 9-8. The match was a repeat of the 2018 final which went Portugal’s way. 

Croatia were undefeated at the tournament after beating Hungary and Romania in their group matches and then the Netherlands in the semi-final. 

There was further good news when Croatia’s Ante Stimac won the top goalscorer of the tournament title with 25 goals. Portugal’s Ricardo Quieros was in second place with 20 goals.

Hungary beat the Netherlands to win the bronze medal whilst Romania beat Slovenia in the 5th-5th playoff.
