Croatians overwhelmingly prefer local wine, new survey reveals

ZAGREB, 31 July (Hina) – Wine is consumed by 81% of Croatian citizens, while 90% prefer wines made by domestic producers, according to a survey by JaTrgovac magazine and the Hendal market research agency.

The survey was conducted in June on a nationally representative sample of Croatian citizens aged 16 and over.

The results show that 81% of citizens drink wine, with 6% consuming it daily and 18% drinking it at least once a week, according to a statement released by JaTrgovac on Friday.

Wine is consumed at least once a month by 19% of respondents, while 21% drink it only on special occasions and 17% consume it rarely. A total of 19% of respondents said they did not drink wine at all.

As regards wine types, the survey showed that Croatian consumers preferred white wine the most, with half of respondents (50%) naming it as their first choice. Red wine is the preferred choice for 42% of consumers, while rosé is favoured by 8%.

The survey showed a strong preference for domestic wines, with 90% of Croatian consumers saying they preferred wines made by local producers. Only 10% opted for imported wines.

Dalmatia is the most popular wine region among Croatian wine drinkers, chosen by 39% of respondents. It is followed by wines from Slavonia, with a 26% share, and Istria, preferred by 22% of consumers.

Wines from Hrvatsko Zagorje are the most common choice for 10% of respondents, while Moslavina was selected by 2% of Croatian wine consumers.
