Croatia’s new supplementary health insurance price takes effect today

HZZO

ZAGREB, 1 February 2026 – Croatia’s Health Insurance Fund (HZZO) has officially introduced higher prices for its supplementary health insurance, with the new rates coming into force today following a decision by its Governing Council.

HZZO has adopted amendments to its pricing framework, setting the annual cost of supplementary health insurance at €180, equivalent to €15 per month.

The revised price applies to both existing policyholders and new contracts from 1 February 2026.

The change represents a notable rise from the previous annual fee of €111.49, or €9.29 per month, which had remained unchanged since 2013.

HZZO has stated that the adjustment reflects the significant increase in healthcare-related expenses over the past decade.

According to the Fund, demand for medical services has grown steadily, while the costs of medical supplies, consumables and wages across the health sector have also risen.

Wider inflationary pressures affecting nearly all aspects of the economy have further challenged the long-term sustainability of the current insurance model, the Fund added.

In a statement, HZZO said the new premium level is necessary to maintain a stable and inclusive healthcare system.

Despite the increase, certain categories of insured persons will remain entitled to free supplementary health insurance, with coverage funded directly from the state budget. These exemptions are aimed at protecting low-income and vulnerable groups from additional financial burden.

HZZO emphasised that the revised pricing structure, combined with continued state-backed protections, is intended to preserve the accessibility of Croatia’s public healthcare system while ensuring its financial viability in the years ahead.

The new rates are now in effect nationwide.
