Strait of Hormuz
Two Croatian seafarers are among the crew of a vessel seized by Iranian forces while transiting the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, Croatia’s Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs has confirmed, HRT reported.
The ministry stated that the ship, MSC Francesca, was intercepted during a broader operation carried out by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Footage released by Iranian authorities shows the seizure of the cargo vessel MSC Epaminondas, while two additional ships, including MSC Francesca and Euphoria, were also detained and redirected.
Iranian officials said they are closely monitoring maritime activity in the Strait of Hormuz and warned of firm action against what they describe as violations.
Croatian authorities respond
Croatia’s Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs confirmed that two Croatian nationals are aboard one of the seized vessels. Officials said that diplomatic and consular services acted immediately upon receiving the information to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The ministry emphasised that it is in continuous contact with the families of the seafarers, as well as with relevant Croatian and international bodies.
“The priority is the protection of the interests, rights and safety of Croatian citizens,” the ministry said in a statement, adding that it will continue to monitor developments and take all necessary steps.
Due to the sensitivity of the case, no further details have been released at this stage.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical shipping routes, with a significant portion of global energy supplies passing through the narrow passage. Incidents in the area often draw international attention due to their potential impact on global trade and security.
The situation involving the seized vessels continues to develop.
