Đakovo Cathedral and Osijek Co-Cathedral getting major restoration

Osijek Co-Cathedral

Croatia’s Culture and Media Minister Nina Obuljen Koržinek visited Osijek-Baranja County this week for meetings focused on the restoration of two of eastern Croatia’s most important religious and cultural landmarks, the cathedral in Đakovo and the co-cathedral in Osijek.

During her visit to Đakovo, the minister held talks with Archbishop Đuro Hranić, Osijek-Baranja County Prefect Nataša Tramišak and Đakovo Mayor Marin Mandarić.

The meeting focused on restoration plans for the two historic churches, regarded among the most valuable monuments in Slavonia and wider Croatia, the ministry said in a statement.

Obuljen Koržinek said both projects have been completed at the planning stage, with a specialist team set to be formed to oversee the restoration process.

She noted that neither building had undergone major investment for many years, making urgent repairs necessary. Work will begin with roof restoration projects, while conservation and restoration works will run alongside the structural renewal.

Tramišak said project documentation had been prepared through the Council for Slavonia, Baranja and Srijem, with support from the Croatian Government. She added that the minister’s visit confirmed that restoration work would soon begin.

Archbishop Hranić said only partial interventions had previously been carried out on the buildings and highlighted the quality of the original construction overseen by Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer more than a century ago.

He added that a professional team should be formed by early September to coordinate the next phase of works and financing plans.

Following the meeting, officials visited Reichsmann House and the Museum of Đakovština, where an energy renovation project has recently been completed as part of Croatia’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan and the Ministry of Culture and Media’s heritage building renovation programme.

The visit continued in Osijek on Wednesday, where the minister toured the city’s co-cathedral, where roof restoration works have already started.
