ZAGREB, 14 November 2019 – The Croatian government has announced that the nation will hold its presidential election on December 22, 2019.

Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic announced the date of the first round of the presidential elections during a session on Thursday in Zagreb.

Current president Kolinda Grabar Kitarovic is seeking a second five-year term, and is being challenged by a number of candidates, including former Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic and singer Miroslav Skoro.

An absolute majority (50% + 1 vote) of all votes cast (including invalid and blank ballots) is required to win in the first round. If there is no majority winner on the night, then a presidential runoff vote will be held on January 5, 2020 between the top two candidates.

This will be the seventh presidential elections since the first direct ones were held in 1992.
