Hrvatska pošta ( has issued a warning over a new scam targeting residents in the wider Zagreb city centre area, after reports emerged of fraudsters posing as postal workers.
According to the postal service, unknown individuals have been arriving at customers’ addresses with parcels that were never ordered and requesting payment for cash-on-delivery charges before handing over the packages.
Hrvatska pošta urged customers expecting deliveries with cash-on-delivery payments to pay close attention to several details in order to avoid potential fraud.
The company said official postmen can be identified by their uniforms displaying the company’s official logo. Customers are also able to pay delivery charges either contactlessly or in cash, while recipients are required to provide a digital signature using the device carried by the postman during delivery.
The postal service further warned that fraudulent parcels do not carry the official address label used by Hrvatska pošta. Instead, scammers are reportedly using a form available at post offices which is intended only for sending parcels and not as an official delivery label.
Residents who are not expecting a parcel have been advised to first check with household members to confirm whether anyone ordered a delivery and from whom. Customers who are expecting a shipment should also verify that the cash-on-delivery amount matches the value of the goods stated by the online retailer at the time of purchase.
Hrvatska pošta advised anyone who has been the victim of fraud or an attempted scam to contact the police and the company’s customer support centre.
