Pope Francis
Pope Francis passed away on Easter Monday, leaving behind a legacy of humility, wisdom, and hope that touched the hearts of millions across the world.
Croatian leaders and institutions have joined the international community in paying tribute to the late pontiff, who was widely respected not only within the Catholic Church but also far beyond it.
President Zoran Milanović shared his condolences in a heartfelt message on social media, describing Pope Francis as “a much-needed voice of reason and peace in today’s world.”
He praised the Pope’s ability to connect with people from all walks of life, saying his simple, honest approach and dedication to justice and compassion made him a beacon of hope.
“Whether speaking about war as a failure of politics, or calling for the protection of the weakest in society, his words always came from the heart,” said Milanović.
“He had the courage to open the Church to people and listen to the voices of the modern age. The path he led the Catholic Church on remains a powerful source of hope for a better, fairer and more peaceful world.”
Prime Minister Andrej Plenković also expressed his sympathy in a message sent to Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church. He described Pope Francis as “a man of faith, simplicity, humility and strength” whose spiritual journey left a deep mark on the modern world.

Pope Francis
As the first Latin American pope and son of immigrants, Pope Francis brought a unique voice to the Vatican. A Jesuit who followed the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi, he stood with the poor, the sick and the forgotten. His calls for solidarity, mercy and social justice resonated with millions.
Plenković highlighted the Pope’s efforts to promote dialogue between religions and to speak out for those without a voice. “His message against the globalisation of indifference and his fight for peace, life and nonviolence will remain a lasting call to our conscience.”
He also shared a personal memory, saying he had the honour of meeting the Pope on Easter Sunday, just hours before his passing.
“It was a brief but deeply moving moment, filled with gentleness, smiles and blessing – a memory our family will treasure forever,” he said.
The Croatian Football Federation (HNS) also paid tribute to Pope Francis, recalling the national team’s visit to the Vatican last year ahead of Euro 2024.
“We received the news of Pope Francis’s death with great sadness,” HNS said in a statement. “His humility, wisdom and messages of hope left a lasting mark on the hearts of millions. Our players had the honour of meeting him in person and felt the warmth and strength of his presence. Rest in peace, Holy Father.”
