Croatia offering 700 scholarships for diaspora to learn Croatian language and culture

ZAGREB, 27 June 2026 (Hina) – Croatia’s Ministry of Demography and Immigration has announced up to 700 scholarships for members of the Croatian diaspora to study the Croatian language and learn about the country’s cultural heritage during the 2026/2027 academic year.

The programme represents an increase of 200 scholarships compared with the previous academic year.

Applications are open until 6 July 2026.

Eligible applicants include Croatian emigrants, their descendants and spouses, provided they are at least 18 years old and have completed secondary education.

Scholarships are available for either the winter or summer semester, or for both.

The winter semester runs from the beginning of October 2026 until the end of January 2027, while the summer semester runs from the beginning of March until mid-June 2027.

Courses will be delivered by the Faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb, Split, Rijeka, Osijek and Pula, as well as the University of Zadar.

The scholarship covers tuition fees, subsidised meals and accommodation support worth €400 per month for either student residence halls or private accommodation.

Travel costs to and from Croatia, as well as local public transport expenses, are not included.

Applications must be submitted online through the Ministry’s electronic application form. As part of the application, candidates are required to submit a motivation letter of between 250 and 500 words.
