New heatwave set to hit Croatia as temperatures could reach 40°C

Croatia is set to experience another spell of intense summer heat, with temperatures expected to climb to around 40°C next week, according to the latest forecast.

Meteorologist Bojan Lipovšćak said for N1 the new heatwave is being driven by a strong anticyclone and dry air moving eastwards from North Africa across western Europe.

The system has already brought extreme heat to Spain and Portugal and is also influencing weather in Ireland and southern parts of the United Kingdom.

At the same time, eastern Europe is under the influence of a deep low-pressure system extending south from the Baltic region, bringing cooler, more unstable air.

Croatia currently lies between these two contrasting weather systems, with occasional intrusions of unstable, moist air from the north. This is expected to bring afternoon cloud development, particularly across inland areas, where isolated thunderstorms remain possible.

A weakened cold front associated with the eastern European low will pass north of Croatia, bringing scattered showers, thunderstorms and a slight drop in temperatures. The front is forecast to move away quickly, with settled and sunny weather returning from Sunday as temperatures begin to rise once again.

New heatwave

According to current forecast models, the heatwave is expected to peak around 17 July, when daytime temperatures could reach 40°C in parts of the country.

Current forecasts suggest the heatwave may come to an end on 19 or 20 July, when a stronger cold front is expected to move through Croatia, bringing cooler conditions.

The forecast is based on the latest meteorological guidance and may be updated as weather models develop.
