ZAGREB, 16 April 2026 – Clinical Hospital Dubrava in Zagreb has introduced a highly specialised diagnostic method, full mitochondrial genome DNA sequencing, marking a first for Croatia’s public healthcare system.

The new service represents a significant step forward in precision and personalised medicine, strengthening the hospital’s position as one of the country’s leading medical and scientific research centres.

Mitochondria, essential structures within human cells, are responsible for energy production and metabolic regulation.

Because they play a crucial role in nearly all tissues and organs, dysfunctions can lead to a wide range of complex conditions.

These include neurological and muscular diseases, metabolic and cardiac disorders, as well as multi-system syndromes that often remain undiagnosed, the hospital said in a statement.

Until now, standard genetic testing has largely focused on the nuclear genome, frequently overlooking the mitochondrial genome.

This gap has limited the ability to detect certain conditions accurately. The introduction of comprehensive mitochondrial genome profiling is therefore expected to significantly enhance diagnostic capabilities across multiple areas of medicine.

The testing is carried out within the hospital’s Department of Scientific Research and Translational Medicine, as part of a newly established unit dedicated to regenerative and systems biomedicine.

This interdisciplinary initiative aims to integrate cutting-edge genomic technologies into everyday clinical practice, bridging the gap between advanced research and patient care.

As one of Croatia’s key healthcare institutions, Clinical Hospital Dubrava has long played an important role in developing high-level diagnostics, medical education, and translational medicine.

The new diagnostic service is available to patients through the national system. A specialist doctor determines the indication, while referrals are processed via general practitioners, in line with procedures set by Croatian Health Insurance Fund.
