Rare May heatwave sees new temperature records set across Croatia

Croatia is experiencing an unusually prolonged spell of hot weather for May, with several temperature records broken across the country in recent days.

Although the heatwave affecting Croatia has been less intense than in some other parts of Europe, meteorologist Zoran Vakula warned that the duration of above-average temperatures is uncommon for this time of year.

Speaking to HRT, Vakula said that while hot days and warm nights at the end of May are not unusual, particularly along the Adriatic coast, such a long period of exceptionally warm weather is relatively rare.

Several meteorological stations across Croatia have recorded new daily temperature highs over the past week.

In Dubrovnik, records for the highest daily temperature were broken on 22, 23 and 26 May.

In Rijeka, temperatures reached 31.4°C on 24 May, marking the highest temperature recorded so early in the year since measurements began in 1948.

Further records were also set in Omišalj, where temperatures climbed to 32.1°C, and on Rab, which recorded 33°C, the highest May temperatures ever measured at those stations.

The peak of the heatwave is expected across Croatia today, with daytime temperatures generally ranging between 29°C and 33°C.

However, forecasters have also warned of possible localised storms developing later in the day as atmospheric instability increases, particularly in inland regions. Heavy showers, thunderstorms, strong winds and hail are possible in some areas.

Authorities have advised people to remain cautious, especially in exposed areas such as mountains, forests, meadows and open terrain. Outdoor activities could also face disruption due to severe thunderstorms.

According to forecasts from DHMZ, weather conditions are expected to partially stabilise from Thursday.

Despite the brief cooling period, forecasters say hotter conditions are likely to return again by Saturday, while the Adriatic coast is expected to remain mostly sunny with moderate, and at times strong, bura winds.
