Croatia expands AI-powered fire detection system to 25 new locations

Croatia has expanded its national early fire detection network, adding 25 new locations and strengthening surveillance in some of the country’s most environmentally sensitive areas.
The existing system, which previously operated with 50 monitoring cameras, has been expanded to 75 cameras, with particular attention given to protected areas, including national parks and nature parks, Novi list reports.
The upgraded system uses artificial intelligence and meteorological data to detect smoke and flames and help assess the potential development and spread of fires.
The cameras operate continuously, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, throughout the year. Images and data can be transmitted to county fire monitoring centres, allowing authorities to identify potential fires and respond more quickly.
The technology is designed to automatically recognise signs of smoke and fire during both daytime and night-time conditions.
The expansion comes after a summer marked by repeated fires along parts of the Croatian coast, including major interventions involving firefighters and aerial firefighting aircraft.
Officials say improved early detection is becoming increasingly important as Croatia faces a growing risk from extreme weather and more frequent and intense wildfires associated with climate change.
The project is part of Croatia’s wider climate adaptation programme and is financed through the Competitiveness and Cohesion Programme 2021–2027.
The system is intended not only to protect forests and property but also areas of significant ecological value, where early intervention can help limit damage to protected landscapes and biodiversity.
