Croatia to open new electric car subsidies for citizens with €20 million fund

ZAGREB, 2 September 2026 – Croatia is preparing to launch new subsidies for citizens buying electric vehicles, with a public call expected to be published in October.

After subsidies were introduced for companies last year and for transport companies, including taxi operators, earlier this year, incentives will now be extended to citizens.

The Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund has announced that a public call for co-financing the purchase of energy-efficient vehicles will be launched this autumn.

Environment and Green Transition Minister Marija Vučković told Jutarnji list that applications for citizens for photovoltaic power plants, heat pumps and battery storage systems will open in September. The call covering zero-emission vehicles, including electric cars, is expected to follow in October.

Around €58 million has been allocated from the state budget for the measures, of which €20 million will be earmarked for electric vehicle subsidies.

However, the exact amount that individual citizens will be able to receive has not yet been confirmed.

In previous years, the maximum subsidy available for the purchase of an electric car was €9,000. There have been reports that the new maximum could be lower than in previous subsidy schemes, although this has not been officially confirmed.

Plug-in hybrids excluded

Unlike the 2024 subsidy scheme, plug-in hybrid vehicles will not be eligible for support this year. In previous years, citizens could receive subsidies of up to €5,000 for the purchase of plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Another new feature will be the possibility of receiving support for the purchase and installation of a home charging point.

The Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund said the scheme will cover the purchase of new energy-efficient vehicles in categories L1–L7, including mopeds, motorcycles, motorised tricycles and quadricycles, as well as M1 passenger vehicles powered by electricity or hydrogen, writes Automobiliona. 

The move is expected to provide another incentive for Croatian citizens to switch to zero-emission vehicles, although details of the subsidy amounts and application conditions are still to be announced.
