Dalić to make changes to Croatia line-up and system against Panama

Following a 4-2 defeat to England in the opening round of Group L at the World Cup, Croatia head coach Zlatko Dalić is expected to make both tactical and personnel changes ahead of the match against Panama in Toronto.

The loss to England came in a system featuring a back three, with wing-backs dropping into defence during phases without possession. Despite tactical adjustments during the match, Croatia were unable to contain England’s attacking threat.

Return to a back four expected

Dalić had indicated before the tournament that Croatia would likely vary systems depending on the opposition.

Following Wednesday’s defeat, Croatia are now expected to revert to a more familiar structure, most likely a 4-2-3-1 formation. This formation, along with 4-3-3, has brought Dalić his success during his tenure in charge.

Changes are expected in defence. Josip Šutalo and either Marin Pongračić or Duje Ćaleta-Car will play in the centre of a back four with Josip Stanišić and Joško Gvardiol on the right and left respectively.

Youngster Luka Vušković is considered better suited to a back three system and is therefore expected to miss out in a four-man defensive setup.

Modrić 200th game

In midfield, Luka Modrić is set to start in what will be his 200th appearance for Croatia.

Mateo Kovačić is expected to return to the starting XI after a solid half an hour against England off the bench, while Petar Sučić, Ivan Perišić and Martin Baturina will play more attacking roles from the midfield.

Budimir likely to start

Dalić hinted during the week that Ante Budimir will likely start up front, ahead of Petar Musa, who scored in the opening match against England.
