700 scholarships awarded for diaspora Croatian language courses

ZAGREB, 6 Aug (Hina) – The Ministry of Demography and Immigration has published a ranked list of 386 successful applicants for scholarships to study the Croatian language in Croatia during the 2026/2027 academic year.

A total of 700 scholarships have been awarded, with 335 covering the winter semester and 365 the summer semester.

The scholarship recipients come from 24 countries.

Under a public call launched in June, the ministry offered up to 700 scholarships for the upcoming academic year, 200 more than in the previous year.

Eligible applicants included members of the Croatian diaspora, their descendants and spouses, provided they were adults and had completed secondary education.

Around a quarter of all scholarships were awarded to candidates from Argentina. They were followed by Chile (more than 70), Peru (more than 45), Bolivia (37), the United States (27), Ecuador (around 15), Venezuela, Brazil and New Zealand (around 10 each), Russia and the United Kingdom (two each), and the Philippines, Israel, Morocco, Libya and France (one each).

Scholarships were awarded for either one semester or both the winter and summer semesters. The winter semester begins in October this year and runs until the end of January 2027, while the summer semester runs from early March to mid-June 2027.

The courses are offered by the faculties of humanities and social sciences in Zagreb, Split, Rijeka, Osijek and Pula, as well as the University of Zadar. Nearly half of all scholarship recipients chose to study in Zagreb, while Pula attracted the fewest, with around 15 students.

The scholarship covers tuition fees, subsidised meals and a monthly accommodation allowance of €400 for either student residence halls or private accommodation.

The allowance is paid to scholarship recipients who successfully complete the enrolled semester.The number of available places in student residence halls is determined by the Ministry of Science, Education and Youth and recipients with higher scores who are no older than 33 are given priority for this type of accommodation.
