ZAGREB, 23 April 2026 – The Hrvatska narodna banka, in collaboration with the Hrvatska kovnica novca, has unveiled a new numismatic issue dedicated to August Šenoa, marking the third release in the “Croatian Literature” series.

Šenoa remains one of the most influential figures in Croatian cultural history.

Widely regarded as the founder of modern Croatian literature, his work shaped not only the literary landscape of the 19th century but also the cultural identity of both Zagreb and the nation as a whole.

His most celebrated works continue to hold a prominent place in Croatia’s heritage.

His life story is particularly striking. Raised in a German-speaking household, Šenoa first encountered the Croatian language as a boy in Zagreb’s Ribnjak park.

This early experience set him on a path that would define his life’s work. By day, he served as a city senator, while by night he wrote works that would endure for generations.

While working as a city clerk, Šenoa explored historical records from Gradec and Kaptol, where he discovered the story of a conflict between citizens and the powerful Medvedgrad lord Stjepko Gregorijanec.

This discovery inspired what would become Zlatarovo zlato, recognised as the first modern Croatian historical novel.

Beyond literature, Šenoa was a journalist, translator, dramaturge, theatre critic and editor of the influential journal Vienac.

He was also an avid numismatist, with records of his personal coin collection adding a unique connection to this commemorative release.

The coins are struck in high-quality mint condition and issued in strictly limited numbers. The one-ounce gold coin is limited to just 50 pieces, while the 1/8-ounce gold edition is available in 150 pieces. A one-ounce silver coin will be issued in a series of 1,000.

More than a tribute to a writer, the release reflects a period when literature played a crucial role in shaping Croatian national identity.

Šenoa’s contribution to the development of the Croatian language remains deeply valued, and this edition stands as a lasting symbol of national appreciation.

The “August Šenoa” collection will be available for purchase via the Croatian Mint’s online store from 28 April 2026 at 9:00 CET, with delivery scheduled throughout May.
