Croatia only marginally cheaper than Germany, losing price edge to tourist rivals

BERLIN, 9 June 2026 (Hina) – Croatia remains a more affordable holiday destination than Germany for German tourists, but its price advantage is considerably smaller than that of many competing destinations in southern Europe, according to newly published figures.

Data released on Monday by Germany’s Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) in Wiesbaden shows that hotel and restaurant services in Croatia are on average 9 per cent cheaper than in Germany.

The figures indicate that several popular Mediterranean destinations offer significantly better value for German visitors.

In Greece, hotel and dining prices are 18 per cent lower than in Germany, while Spain is 22 per cent cheaper.

Among the most affordable destinations for German travellers is Montenegro, where accommodation and hospitality services cost 39 per cent less than the German average.

Bulgaria offers even greater savings, with tourists paying 47 per cent less than they would at home.

North Macedonia was identified as the cheapest destination in the comparison, with accommodation and restaurant prices 52 per cent lower than those in Germany.

The data also shows that prices in Italy and Austria, both long-standing favourites among German holidaymakers, are broadly in line with those in Germany.

At the other end of the scale, Germany’s northern and western neighbours were found to be considerably more expensive.

The highest costs were recorded in Iceland and neighbouring Switzerland, where German tourists pay around 49 per cent more for accommodation and hospitality services than they do in Germany.

The latest statistics highlight the growing competition among European tourism destinations as travellers continue to compare value for money alongside traditional factors such as climate, attractions and accessibility when planning their holidays.
