The results of year-long polls, which were used to make up the 2013 Readers Travel Awards, were announced in the weekend edition of The Guardian, and saw Austria take the number one spot, followed by Sweden in second place and Croatia in third. In other categories, Japan was the favourite long-haul destination among Britons, followed by Peru, Cambodia and Costa Rica, whilst favourite overseas city went to Tokyo. San Francisco was in second place with Copenhagen in third. Bath, Edinburgh and York were the top three favourite UK cities.
2013 saw more than 25% growth in the number of tourists from the UK to visit Croatia, with more than 500,000 expected to arrive next year.
