Borna Coric Knocks Roger Federer off World No.1 Spot to Win ATP Title in Germany

Borna Coric (ATP Halle)

21-year-old Croatian tennis player Borna Coric has caused a huge upset in the final of the ATP Halle in Germany on Sunday by beating Roger Federer 7-6 (8/6), 3-6, 6-2 to claim his second ATP title.

Coric’s win also knocked Federer off the No.1 ATP ranking spot and ended his 20-match winning streak on grass which started back in June last year.

The opening set went the Croatian’s way in a tie-breaker 8-6. Federer came back in the second set to level the match 6-3 but the 34th ranked Coric, who knocked out German second seed Alexander Zverev in the first round, held his nerve in the final set.

Coric broke the Swiss ace to move out to 5-2 and completed the upset on a second match point a game later as Federer’s volley hit the top of the net.

Coric is the first Croatian to reach the final at Halle and now has two ATP titles to his name after winning in Marrakesh in 2017.

The win puts Coric in good stead ahead of Wimbledon which starts on 2 July and he will jump to a career-high ranking of No.21 on Monday.
