BJELOVAR, 30 May 2025 – The city of Bjelovar is preparing to once again transform into a vibrant stage for one of Croatia’s most beloved festivals – Terezijana.
This five-day celebration, now in its 29th edition, blends history, culture, and entertainment, drawing inspiration from the city’s imperial past and the legacy of Empress Maria Theresa.
Taking place from 18 to 22 June, the festival promises an unforgettable experience for visitors of all ages, offering a packed schedule of performances, concerts, exhibitions, workshops, and culinary delights.
A Festival Fit for an Empress
This year’s programme was officially presented at a press conference held at the National and University Library in Zagreb. Bjelovar’s Mayor Dario Hrebak, Deputy Mayor Igor Brajdić, and Director of the Bilogora-Bjelovar Tourist Board Ana Kelek shared exciting details about what awaits at Terezijana 2025.
The event was hosted by popular presenter Ida Prester, with a musical interlude provided by acclaimed cellist Ana Gjud. Artists and performers from across Croatia took the stage to give a taste of what’s to come, including Mladen Bodalec, Zdenka Kovačiček, Mirela Priselac Remi, Sejo Sexon, Goran Vinčić, Mario Petreković, and many others.
The festivities were given a regal touch by the appearance of Empress Maria Theresa herself – portrayed by local actress Anita Čleković Vegh – who arrived in full imperial style with her court in tow.
A Programme for Everyone
From lively historical reenactments and musical performances to family workshops and theatre, this year’s Terezijana is designed to entertain and engage all generations.
“Terezijana has grown beyond a local celebration – it’s now a national and even international cultural event,” said Mayor Hrebak. “We invite everyone to experience the spirit of Bjelovar through this festival of history, culture, and community.”
With over 800 participants in the grand imperial parade, performances by cultural groups from across Croatia, and international acts from five countries, the event will turn Bjelovar into a cultural hub. Street performances, dance shows, and themed zones will keep the city buzzing with energy throughout the festival.
Deputy Mayor Brajdić highlighted the family-friendly nature of the event: “From pre-schoolers to grandparents, there’s truly something for everyone. We’re especially proud of our efforts to preserve and showcase our cultural heritage.”
A Warm Welcome in Croatia’s Friendliest City
Bjelovar has recently been named Croatia’s friendliest city by travel platform Booking.com, earning a Traveller Review Award for outstanding hospitality. According to Ana Kelek, this is what makes visitors come back again and again.
“Beyond the rich programme, Bjelovar offers beautiful nature, excellent gastronomy, and, above all, heartfelt hospitality,” Kelek said. “Terezijana is a perfect opportunity to discover everything our region has to offer.”

A City Founded by Royal Command
The legend of Bjelovar’s founding adds an extra layer of historical charm to the festival. In 1756, according to local lore, Empress Maria Theresa’s carriage broke down in the area. Local hussars from Bilogora came to her aid, and in gratitude, she granted the order to build the city. What began as a military post soon became the thriving town of Bjelovar.
The festival itself commemorates this imperial connection, honouring the city’s origins and celebrating its vibrant present.

Terezijana is organised by the City of Bjelovar, co-organised by the Bilogora-Bjelovar Tourist Board and the Centre for Lifelong Learning and Culture, and held under the patronage of the Ministry of Tourism and Sport.
