Bhutan formally recognises Croatia, leaving only two countries yet to do so in the world

ZAGREB, 16 June 2026 – Croatia has welcomed the decision of the Kingdom of Bhutan to formally recognise the Republic of Croatia, describing it as an important step in strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation between the two countries.

The Croatian government said the recognition represents a significant development in the formalisation of relations between Croatia and Bhutan and reflects the interests and diplomatic procedures of both states.

According to the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, the recognition is the result of diplomatic efforts undertaken by the Croatian Government, the Ministry, Croatia’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations and the Croatian Embassy in New Delhi.

Although Croatia and Bhutan have already cooperated within the framework of the United Nations and other multilateral organisations, the move provides a stronger foundation for the development of future relations.

Croatia said the recognition reinforces opportunities for cooperation based on mutual respect, sovereign equality and a shared commitment to promoting peace, stability and sustainable development.

As a member of the European Union and NATO, Croatia reiterated its commitment to strengthening international cooperation and building partnerships with countries across Asia.

The recognition also means that only two countries have yet to formally recognise Croatia – Niger and Tonga.

There are no known political disputes between Croatia and either country.

Analysts note that the absence of formal recognition is largely the result of diplomatic inertia and the limited strategic importance both sides place on establishing formal relations.

Niger and Tonga maintain highly selective and regionally focused foreign policies, and Croatia has not actively prioritised recognition efforts with either state.

Bhutan’s decision marks another step in Croatia’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its international partnerships and diplomatic presence around the world.
