Renowned British historian, author, and television presenter Bettany Hughes has visited Croatia for the first time to film a special episode of her popular documentary series Treasures of the World.

The episode, aptly titled Treasures of Croatia, will showcase the country’s rich cultural and historical heritage.

Hughes and her team from Sandstone Global production explored several key locations including Dubrovnik, Ston, Korčula, and Split. During their stay, they delved deep into the local history and discovered the stories behind some of Croatia’s most treasured landmarks.

The project was made possible with the support of the Croatian National Tourist Board (CNTB), in cooperation with regional and local tourist boards. The aim is to further promote Croatia as a destination rich in heritage and cultural depth.

Bettany Hughes is celebrated for making history accessible and engaging through her award-winning documentaries.

Her Treasures of the World series is broadcast on the British network Channel 4, as well as numerous international platforms, ultimately reaching audiences in over 120 countries with a viewership of more than 200 million people.

“Croatia will be presented as a land of remarkable history and unique sites,” said Bisera Fabrio, Director of the CNTB’s UK Office, who accompanied Hughes and her team during the filming.

“Bettany was genuinely impressed by the locations, the warm hospitality, exceptional cuisine, and above all, the stunning landscapes and natural beauty. She was so taken by Croatia that she plans to return soon with her family for a private visit.”

Fabrio also highlighted the strong public reaction to Hughes’ presence: “Everywhere she filmed, fans approached her—tourists from around the world and local residents alike—expressing excitement that she was creating a documentary about Croatia.”
