An album decades in the making has officially seen the light of day.

Australian-Croatian musician Doug Drago Ivanek has released the first single from his upcoming album Nisu Važne Godine, which premiered on CMC on Tuesday.

The full album is being released in collaboration with Croatia Records, marking a significant milestone in a journey shaped by distance, identity and an enduring love for the homeland.

A Life Between Valpovo and Sydney

Born in Croatian town of Valpovo, Ivanek moved to Sydney with his family at the age of ten.

While Australia offered a new beginning, Croatia remained at the centre of his identity.

Music formed part of his life from early childhood. He learned to play the accordion and bass guitar, sang regularly, and performed with folklore groups and Croatian bands.

Like many in the diaspora, he was a familiar presence at community gatherings, weddings and celebrations organised within Croatian clubs and organisations across Australia.

Yet as the years passed, family, work and responsibility took precedence. Music stepped away from the stage, but it never truly left.

Instead, it transformed into written words. Lyrics became a private outlet, capturing reflections on migrant life, nostalgia, belonging and a deep emotional bond with Croatia.

The strongest emotions emerged during the Croatian War of Independence. Like many Croatian emigrants, Ivanek felt the weight of events unfolding thousands of kilometres away.

During this period, he was actively involved in organising large community gatherings and humanitarian concerts across Australia, not only in Sydney, but in other cities as well.

Events were held in Croatian clubs, football clubs, churches and community centres, all with one shared goal: to support the Croatian people and its defenders.

The unity, hope and pain of that time left a permanent mark. Those emotions, deeply embedded in the collective memory of the diaspora, later found their way into his songs.

From Lyrics to Studio

Years later, the moment finally arrived to turn long-written lyrics into recorded music.

A key turning point came when Ivanek reconnected with longtime friend Stanko Šarić, who recognised the sincerity and meaning within his songwriting. The collaboration continued with Mario Vestić, who helped refine the lyrical expression, ensuring that the emotional core remained authentic.

The final sound of the album was shaped by producer and musician Toni Lović, whose production, arrangements and guitar performances gave Nisu Važne Godine its depth and musical identity.

The result is not merely a collection of songs, but a cohesive and reflective body of work.

A Tribute to Homeland and Heritage

Nisu Važne Godine stands as more than a debut album. It is a life story told through music, the testimony of one emigrant and, in many ways, one generation.

For Croatian communities in Australia and beyond, the album reflects familiar themes: the challenge of preserving identity abroad, the emotional pull of the homeland and the quiet pride carried across continents.

Though created far from the stages and studios of Croatia, the album ultimately returns home through its release with Croatia Records and its premiere on CMC, bridging the distance between Australia and Croatia.

In doing so, Doug Drago Ivanek offers not only music, but a heartfelt tribute to a homeland that was never forgotten. Check out the single below.
