Arable land prices in Croatia the lowest in the EU

Croatia has the lowest arable land prices in the European Union, according to the latest data published by Eurostat today.
In 2023, the average price for one hectare of arable land in Croatia was just €4,491, significantly below the EU average of €11,791 per hectare.
Croatia’s low arable land prices placed it at the bottom of the EU list, alongside Latvia (€4,591 per hectare) and Slovakia (€5,189 per hectare).
In stark contrast, Malta recorded the highest land prices, with a staggering €283,039 per hectare.
Other countries with expensive land include the Netherlands (€91,154 per hectare) and Luxembourg (€42,540 per hectare).
There are also notable regional differences across the EU. For example, the highest land price outside Malta was found in Wien, Austria (€189,000 per hectare), followed by Flevoland in the Netherlands (€178,093 per hectare) and the Canary Islands in Spain (€148,247 per hectare).
Conversely, some of the cheapest land in the EU was found in Sweden’s Övre Norrland (€1,951 per hectare) and Mellersta Norrland (€2,378 per hectare).

While arable land rental prices in Croatia were not specified, the EU average stood at €173 per hectare annually. The highest rental prices were found in the Netherlands, where the average reached €914 per hectare.
In contrast, Slovakia recorded the lowest average land rental prices in the EU at €67 per hectare. The Swedish regions of Övre Norrland (€24 per hectare) and Mellersta Norrland (€24 per hectare) had the lowest regional rental costs.
