The Croatian Football Federation (HNS) has officially appointed legendary former international Aljoša Asanović as its ambassador for the FIFA World Cup 2026, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The decision was confirmed by the HNS Executive Committee following a proposal from HNS President Marijan Kustić.
Under the agreement, Asanović will represent both the Croatian Football Federation and the national team during the tournament, accompanying the Vatreni throughout their stay in North America.
A Respected International Figure
President Kustić said Asanović was a natural choice for the ambassadorial role, highlighting his international reputation, extensive playing career and strong relationships within world football.
“I am delighted that Aljoša accepted this proposal and will be part of our delegation at the World Cup,” Kustić said. “He is internationally recognised, has enjoyed a distinguished club career, maintains excellent relations with football officials worldwide and speaks several foreign languages. All of this makes him an outstanding ambassador for Croatian football.”
Kustić also emphasised Asanović’s personal qualities, describing him as approachable, optimistic and an excellent communicator who embodies the spirit of togetherness that has defined Croatian football’s success.
“Aljoša is a true legend of Croatian football and one of the men who helped build the identity of the national team from its very first match against the United States. That connection makes his role at this World Cup even more meaningful,” Kustić added.
Asanović enjoyed an impressive club career, playing for Hajduk Split, FC Metz, Cannes, Montpellier, Valladolid, Derby County, Napoli, Panathinaikos, Austria Vienna and Sydney United. However, he remains best remembered for his achievements in the Croatian national team shirt.
He earned 62 caps for Croatia, scoring three goals. Most notably, on 17 October 1990, Asanović scored the first-ever goal in the modern history of the Croatian national team, in a match against the United States.
He represented Croatia at its first two major international tournaments — Euro 1996 and the 1998 FIFA World Cup, where Croatia famously won the bronze medal.
Asanović played a crucial role in that historic success, delivering key assists to Goran Vlaović and Davor Šuker, winning a decisive penalty against Romania in the round of 16, and contributing to Croatia’s memorable run to third place in France.
Pride in the Modern Generation
Reacting to his appointment, Asanović said he was honoured to take on the role and praised the current national team for maintaining the values established in the 1990s.
“I recently had the opportunity to attend Croatia’s match against the Faroe Islands in Tórshavn, and I was impressed by the unity within the team,” Asanović said. “It fills me with pride to see that today’s players still carry the same passion, love and commitment to the national team that we had in our generation, and that they have built even greater success on those foundations.”
He thanked President Kustić, the HNS Executive Committee and head coach Zlatko Dalić for their trust, adding that representing Croatia in any capacity remains the greatest honour.
“There is nothing greater than being part of the Croatian national team family,” Asanović concluded.
