A1 motorway to Croatian coast closed after serious crash, helicopter lands

ZAGREB, 31 July 2026 – A section of Croatia’s A1 motorway towards the Adriatic was closed on Friday morning following a serious motorcycle accident near Zagreb, with a medical helicopter called to transport an injured person to hospital.

According to Zagreb Police, the motorway was completely closed in the southbound direction after the crash at the 11-kilometre mark between the Lučko toll station and the Donja Zdenčina interchange.

The accident involved a motorcycle carrying two people. One person was injured and received medical treatment at the scene before being airlifted to hospital by helicopter, Net.hr said.

Drivers heading towards the coast have been diverted via the DC1 state road, also known as the Old Karlovac Road, or through New Zagreb towards Brezovica.

The closure caused traffic to back up from the Lučko toll station, with Croatia’s Automobile Club (HAK) reporting increased traffic density between Zagreb and Zadar in both directions.

Earlier on Friday, police also responded to a separate incident on the A1 when a vehicle travelled in the wrong direction between Jastrebarsko and Lučko before colliding with another vehicle. Fortunately, nobody was injured and the incident did not cause significant traffic disruption.

HAK said traffic remains heavier than usual on major roads, city bypasses, routes leading to tourist destinations, border crossings and ferry ports, as the peak summer travel season continues.

Motorists have been urged to reduce speed, adapt their driving to road conditions and maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead.
