A weekend escape in Karlovac – castle, river cruise, royal stables…

That Karlovac is the heart of Croatia becomes quite clear when you glance at a map. But it’s just as true that many still haven’t truly discovered this central part of the country.
Although tourism here is steadily growing, Karlovac remains a place that many travellers simply pass through. Well, it’s time to change that—and give you a reason to spend a weekend exploring not just this historic city on four rivers, but its enchanting surroundings too.
We’ll take you sailing on a grain barge, strolling through the Old Town of Dubovac, and relaxing at the magical Contessa estate, where history comes to life with activities for all ages.
All Aboard: A River Cruise on the Žitna Lađa
Since Karlovac lies at the crossroads of four rivers, there’s no better way to start than by sailing on the Žitna lađa (Grain Barge).
The boat sets off from the village of Brođani, just 9 kilometres from the city. Most trips follow a route to Kamensko and back, but for larger groups, the journey can continue all the way to the confluence of the Korana and Kupa rivers.
Group sailings can be arranged any day, while individuals or small groups can hop aboard on Saturdays and Sundays at 11am, 3pm, or 5pm.
On board, you’ll enjoy great music, stories from the time when Karlovac was the wealthiest city in Croatia, local wines from the Šoškić winery, and delicious boatman’s snacks.
There’s more: breakfast on the river, team-building games, lunch cruises, wine-and-paint tours, and even live music events.
And from late June, the boat transforms into a party venue with DJs from across Croatia spinning tunes under the open sky.
As you cruise, you’ll pass the Pauline Monastery and the Church of Our Lady of the Snows, sail above a sunken Roman vessel, and glide past World War II bunkers. Look out for white-tailed eagles, kingfishers, herons, and turtles—all from a boat built by women.
In fact, the Žitna lađa Zora is a faithful replica of the 18th-century barges that once sailed the Kupa. It was built in 2016 thanks to EU funding, driven by the vision of Jasmina Cvetković and Ana Prepolec Padežanin, whose association Zvono uz Kupu aims to transform the Karlovac region into a vibrant tourist destination.
Step Back in Time at Dubovac Castle
Perched on a hill above the River Kupa, your next must-see stop is the Old Town of Dubovac.
Just a short walk or drive from the city centre—and accessible by bike if you’re feeling energetic—this beautifully restored castle offers one of the best views in the region from its Branič Tower.
Inside, you’ll find rotating exhibitions, museum programmes, concerts, theatre performances, a charming souvenir shop, and a café with a unique menu.
The name “Dubovac” comes from the old Slavic word dub, meaning oak, and the fortress once served as a vital stronghold against the Ottoman Empire.
Unlike many historical sites in Croatia, Dubovac was lucky enough to undergo a thorough restoration based on preserved architectural plans.
Nearly every part of the castle is in use today, with the courtyard and exhibition halls regularly hosting vibrant cultural events.
And if you love a bit of mystery, there’s even an urban legend about a secret tunnel beneath the castle—an intriguing tale that sparks visitors’ imagination. Curious? Then head to Karlovac and uncover the castle’s centuries-old secrets for yourself.
A Fairytale Ending at Contessa Estate
Just a few minutes’ drive north of Karlovac, in the village of Draganić, lies the storybook Contessa Estate—a dreamlike destination with fantastic family-friendly experiences. Here, you’ll meet imperial horses, tour historic halls, and enjoy a setting that brings the past vividly to life. Birthdays celebrated here feel like scenes from a fairy tale.
You’ll be greeted by noble Lipizzaners, majestic Spanish horses, and adorable ponies. Children can ride, hear magical stories, and take part in culinary and creative workshops.
The manor house, with its authentic historical interiors, reveals the charm of imperial times. On special occasions, visitors are treated to baroque-style riding shows, complete with period costumes and music.
Originally an aristocratic estate from the Austro-Hungarian era (built in 1714), Contessa has been lovingly restored and revitalised. Its owner, Zvjezdana Klarić, together with her daughter Sanja, creates unforgettable experiences for every guest.
In warmer months, the estate bursts with outdoor activities, while in winter, guests gather by the fire for painting workshops and sweet treats.
Contessa is a place where history, tradition, and nature come together in perfect harmony—an experience that stays with you long after your visit ends.
