Works on the reconstruction and expansion of Osijek Airport’s passenger terminal are progressing according to plan.

On Wednesday, the construction site was visited by Osijek Mayor Ivan Radić and Osijek-Baranja County Prefect Nataša Tramišak, accompanied by their teams.

Valued at €14.3 million, the project is one of the most significant infrastructure investments in eastern Croatia’s transport network.

Mayor Radić expressed his satisfaction with the progress, noting that the upgraded terminal will improve comfort for passengers and help attract more traffic.

“The expansion from 2,200 to 2,800 square metres is a major investment for Osijek. The new terminal will provide a more modern, comfortable and faster passenger experience. Since 2021, passenger numbers at Osijek Airport have tripled,” Radić said.

He highlighted that since taking office in 2021, international flights have been reintroduced, first to Munich, then to London, while the airport now maintains regular PSO domestic routes to destinations such as Dubrovnik, Split, Rijeka, Pula and Zadar.

“Once the terminal is complete, together with the County and the Croatian Government we will continue working on introducing new routes. More flights and passengers bring optimism, and this project will only help that momentum grow,” Radić added.

On track for completion by spring 2026

Osijek Airport Director Tihomir Pejin confirmed that construction is proceeding without delays.

“The first phase, which involved external works, has been completed. We are now in the second phase, the interior works. Air traffic continues uninterrupted, and we expect completion by the end of March 2026, in time for the start of the summer flight schedule,” Pejin explained.

Darko Ojvan from Respect-ing, the firm overseeing the works, said that the reconstruction and extension will give Osijek a modern facility that citizens can be proud of. The entrance area will feature a new canopy and improved passenger access.

Originally built in 1970, Osijek Airport last underwent a major renovation in 2007. With this project, the city is set to gain a contemporary, functional terminal that meets all modern aviation standards. Completion is expected by spring 2026.

The mayor also emphasised that the airport investment is part of a broader development drive across Osijek’s transport infrastructure, spanning roads, river ports, railways and public transport.

He noted the recent opening of Corridor Vc, worth over €800 million, the arrival of nine new low-floor trams (with 20 more expected), and upcoming contracts for 19 new electric buses.

The railway station has also been refurbished, while works continue on the river cargo terminal.

“These are unprecedented investments that will greatly contribute to the city’s economic growth,” Radić said.

County Prefect Nataša Tramišak described the terminal project as one of the largest transport infrastructure investments in Osijek-Baranja County.

“We are witnessing significant developments in transport, which is the backbone of economic growth for the entire region. With strong support from the Croatian Government, the County and the City of Osijek, we are truly seeing a renaissance in transport infrastructure,” Tramišak said.
