60th Đakovački Vezovi festival formally opened

ZAGREB, 4 July (Hina) – The 60th Đakovo Vezovi Festival, one of Croatia’s leading traditional folklore events, was officially opened on Friday evening in front of St Peter’s Cathedral in the eastern city of Đakovo, with Austria taking part as this year’s partner country.
The festival programme continued with a stage performance marking the event’s founding in 1967 and paying tribute to its founders and those who have contributed to its six-decade history.
The festival, which began on 19 June, continues on Saturday, while Sunday’s programme will culminate in its traditional parade through the streets of Đakovo, featuring around 70 folklore groups from Croatia and abroad, along with decorated wedding carriages, horse riders and other participants.
Opening the festival, Organising Committee chairman and Đakovo Mayor Marin Mandarić said the event, launched in 1967, had grown into a celebration of Croatia’s rich cultural heritage that would be preserved for future generations.

Speaking on behalf of this year’s partner country, Austrian Ambassador Yvonne Tončić-Sorinj thanked the city of Đakovo and the festival organisers for the opportunity to showcase Austria’s traditions and customs.
The opening ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, several cabinet ministers, Archbishop of Đakovo-Osijek Đuro Hranić and other officials.
