ZAGREB, 22 June (Hina) – President Zoran Milanović earlier this week received a delegation from the Neretva River Boatmen Association, which briefed him on the preparations for this year’s 29th Neretva Ladja Marathon, scheduled for 8 August, the President’s Office said.
According to the Association’s representatives, the preparations are proceeding according to plan. They expect this year’s Marathon to once again successfully showcase the long-standing tradition of river navigation in the Neretva Valley.
The Neretva Lađa Marathon consists of men’s and women’s Lađa crew races, as well as speed trials.
Lađa were used by the old Neretva pirates back in the 10th century. Because of their narrow size, Lađa were able to enter every one of the rivers that flowed into the Neretva as well as the Neretva River itself.

The race is one of the most important tourist events in southern Croatia.
As they do every year, the Neretva River Boatmen Association requested the patronage of the president for this year’s 29th edition of the Marathon, which he accepted.
