2020 US Open: Croatian players learn first-round opponents

US Open starts on Monday

NEW YORK, 28 August 2020 – The second and final Grand Slam of the year gets underway in New York on Monday, and on Thursday the players found out their first-round opponents when the draw was made. 

Five Croatian players will feature in the singles at the US Open this year. 

The 31st seed and former US Open winner, Marin Cilic will play American Denis Kudla, whilst 41-year-old Ivo Karlović will play his first-round match against experienced Frenchman Richard Gasquet. 

Croatia’s final player in the men’s draw is 27th seed Borna Corić. Ćorić starts his US Open campaign against Spain’s Pablo Andújar.

In the women’s draw, 8th seed Petra Martić has drawn Tereza Martincova from the Czech Republic in the first round. 

Donna Vekić, who is the tournament’s 18th seed, will play Czech Republic’s Krstyna Plíšková.

World number one Novak Djokovic opens his campaign for an 18th Grand Slam victory and fourth title against Bosnia’s Damir Dzumhur. The tournament starts on Monday, 31 August with the men’s final being played on  13 September.
