146th anniversary of birth of 1st Croatian female journalist being marked

ZAGREB, Feb 26 (Hina) – The 146th anniversary of the birth of Marija Jurić Zagorka, a novelist and the first female reporter in Croatia, is being marked this week by events organised by the Centre for Women’s Studies.

The Centre, which manages Marija Juric Zagorka’s Memorial Apartment in central Zagreb and carries out educational and cultural activities related to the study and promotion of the heritage of this novelist and female pioneer reporter, has invited visitors to the Memorial Apartment’s Open Day on Thursday,  28 February.

The apartment will also open its doors to visitors from 11 am to 4 pm on Sunday, 3 March.

Commemorative events running through 4 March include workshops, roundtable discussions and quizzes on the the heritage of Marija Juric Zagorka, who wrote dozens of novels and was also known as a champion of women’s and workers’ rights.

 11 of her novels, published in Croatian, are found in the Library of Congress in the United States.

Marija Juric Zagorka was born on 2 March 1873 in a village near Vrbovec, east of Zagreb, and died on 30 November 1957 in Zagreb.
