116-Year-Old Message Found in Zagreb Cathedral Tower: ‘May the Croats be Harmonious and Free’

Croatia Week_Workers doing restoration work on top of the 102-metre bell tower of Zagreb’s famous cathedral have stumbled across a handwritten message from 1898…

The message, which has partly been rendered unreadable because of the elements, read:

“And the good Lord gave, when after centuries this memorial sees the light, that all Croats will be good Catholics, glorious, harmonious and free people….”

The 116-year-old message is believed to be left by Herman Bollé, the person responsible for the last extensive restoration of the cathedral after it was destroyed by a large earthquake in 1880.
