The summer semester at ZSEM, which is now in its 9th consecutive year, attracts over 70 students from around the world, including a student with Croatian roots. One of those who attended last year was John Carroll University’s Matea Čubela, whose parents emigrated to the U.S where she was born.

“John Carroll University offers a variety of study abroad programs, and with my background this seemed like a perfect fit! I typically visit Croatia as a vacation spot, so to experience student life there was wonderful because I saw the country in a new light,” Matea said, before explaining her learning highlights of the course.

“I took two courses: International Management and Croatian Studies. It was interesting to learn more about Croatia’s history and people in the Croatian Studies course. The International Management class offered a wide range of opportunities to learn about the increasing importance of culture in the global marketplace and how it can be beneficial or detrimental to a business.”

Matea says that with such a diverse group of students from all over the world as classmates, it brought her a whole range of viewpoints to light with every topic.

“The program at ZSEM was definitely worthwhile! Not only did we learn about the culture and the people of the country we were in, but outside of the classroom we were able to truly immerse ourselves in it. The summer school program plans a variety of events and fieldtrips, creating the perfect balance between education and recreation,” she concluded.
