The Croatian team and staff have returned back to Croatia on Sunday night after bowing out to Portugal in the round of 16 at EURO 2016 in France on Saturday…

Over 2,000 passionate fans were at Zagreb airport to welcome the team back and they were in good spirits, chanting ‘champions, champions’ as they side made their way through around 21:15 on Sunday night .

“We can be proud with what we showed at EURO. We did not lose one match in regular time (90 minutes) at the tournament,” coach Ante Čačić said.

The large welcome at the airport even took some of the players by surprise.

“We did not expect this. We left our hearts on the pitch, and I am glad that the fans have recognised that. This has cheered us up a bit,” defender Domagoj Vida said as he was swamped with fans trying to get selfies with him.

Marko Pjaca, who made a big impact when given a chance in France, was also happy to see a big turnout in Zagreb.

“We are glad that people have come out to greet us and send their love. Yesterday was very tough for us, everyone saw that we were the better side but not always the better side wins,” Pjaca said.

Check out the video as the team returns (starts around 10 minutes in).
