Borna Ćorić’s best run at the US Open has come to an end at the hands of No. 3 seed Juan Martin del Potro in New York on Sunday night.

The 21-year-old Croatian went down in straight sets to the 2009 US Open champion 6-4, 6-3, 6-1 at Arthur Ashe Stadium in two hours and four minutes.

Ćorić, who had reached the fourth round at Flushing Meadows for the first time, started the match well, returning an early break, but at 5-4 in the first set del Potro got the key break which he says changed the match.

“I think that moment was the key of the match,” del Potro said. “After that … l start to play much better. I think I played even better than the last match.”

Ćorić was broken at 2-1 in the second set when he floated what should have been an easy forehand volley winner out. The Argentine would take the set untroubled.

With his thigh strapped up, Ćorić had no answer in the third set against the powerful del Potro claiming just one game to go down 6-1.
