Exodus From Croatian National Power Company HEP Begins As 1,500 Households Change Providers In A Week

More than 1,500 households in Croatia have reportedly signed up to change power providers away from Croatia’s national power company Hrvatska elektroprivreda (HEP), after Slovenia’s GEN-I and Germany’s RWE Energy entered the Croatian market with cheaper deals this week.

Up until now state-owned HEP have had a stranglehold on the local market, but with the news this week that the Slovenian and Germany power providers would be up to 30% cheaper than their Croatian counterparts, there has been an exodus, with more predicted to come.  Daily Vecernji list reports that the average Croatian household will save on average around 8% by signing up with GEN-I or RWE, which in the current times of harsh economic hardship is a significant saving.

GEN-I says that its plan is to gain 50,000 new customers in Croatia by the end of next year, and gain a 17% share of the electricity market within three years.
