Over 10,000 More Deaths Than Births In Croatia Last Year

Data recently released from the Central Bureau of Statistics does not paint a pretty picture in Croatia when it comes to population growth. In 2012 10,601 more people died than were born in Croatia. There were 42,423 births and 53,024 deaths recorded last year in Croatia, reports Jutarnji list.

Although the statistics are preliminary, the one bit of good news is that the trend in the dramatic fall in birth-rates is stopping. The 2012 birth-rate will be on the same level as that with the birth-rate in 2011, which was 3,500 less than in 2009.

The number of marriages in Croatia in 2012 is also expected to be at 2011 levels, which were the lowest since statistics started, even less than in the peak war year on 1991. In 2011 there were just 20,211 marriages in Croatia, whilst one in three marriages dissolved.
