Learning Croatian: Phrase of the Week

Croatia

You know some basic Croatian, enough to get you by, but there is nothing that will impress more than knowing a local phrase or slang that you can slip into a conversation…

Our ‘Word / Phrase of the Week’ will teach you a variety of words and phrases commonly used in Croatia, but not commonly found in language learning material.

Today’s Phrase:

svako svoga konja hvali

Today’s phrase of the day svako svoga konja hvali is an old folk saying to sum up those who always think their own is the best – will not admit if something else is better. Someone who looks at their own through rose-tinted glasses.

Now this can range from anything such as one saying his town, village, football team, potatoes, car, country, or anything for that matter is the best. The literal translation is – Everyone praises his own horse.
