Learning Croatian – Phrase of the Day

You know some basic Croatian, enough to get you by, but there is nothing that will impress more than knowing a local phrase or slang that you can slip into a conversation. Croatia Week has launched its ‘Word / Phrase of the Day’, where we will teach you a variety of words and phrases commonly used in Croatia, but not commonly found in language learning material.

Today’s Phrase

cevapi1
Tko prvi, njegova djevojka

The phrase Tko prvi, njegova djevojka is basically the equivalent of the English phrase – ‘first in, first served’. The literal translation however of the Croatian version is – Who is first gets the girl.

  1. Stari ribar says:

Tko prvi, njegova djevojka…….thinking about the literal translation reminded me of how we can learn a lot about languages from our mistakes…….the number of times I stood in Trg Republika (Ban Jelacic) under the clock waiting to meet someone and not understanding why they didn’t turn up at pol sedam (half seven) = 19:30 in VB but 18:30 in Zagreb! Or why girls thought you were nuts if you asked “Da li zelis nesto za popit?” when most teenagers would say “Kaj piješ?”

  2. Bane says:

When the girl says “to je fakat odlicno” I thought she wanted to f**k.

  3. Necesary Bane Quotes says:

Tko je debilu, ruzan i grozan, ali ima kreditn karticu, njegova djevojku.
